- ESOL | Campbells Bay School
ESOL We are proud of our highly regarded ESOL programme at Campbells Bay School. Students in the ESOL programme may be NZ-born or migrants/International students from non-English-speaking backgrounds. Our learners from varied cultures and language backgrounds are taught by highly qualified and experienced ESOL teachers and teacher aides in a learning environment that is supportive of learners who speak English as an additional language. Children will often acquire conversational competence after a year or two of learning a second language. It takes between five and seven years to gain the academic language skills required for engaging with the curriculum. Each curriculum area has its own particular language, and support is needed to become proficient in reading, writing, expressing ideas, vocabulary, and structures of math, science, social studies, etc. The ESOL programme is taught at levels appropriate to the student’s level of proficiency in small groups of students from similar year levels and with similar needs. The specialist team recognises that there are varied language needs from foundation to more advanced academic language, and this is reflected in the delivery of the programme, being responsive to each student’s needs, and taught at the level students are working at. This means that students may be withdrawn from class to receive two, three or four sessions of targeted language support per week or per term, or they may remain in class where strategies, adaptations and considerations that will continue support at a distance are shared with and provided by the classroom teacher. At its most concerted level, we have ELIP-intensive, which offers 2-hour sessions 4 days a week. All ESOL lessons cover listening, speaking, reading, and writing and are delivered in ways that support classroom inquiry and language to access the New Zealand Curriculum. This is achieved through engaging in aspects of vocabulary, structure, grammar, and conversation. The Ministry of Education English Language Learning Progressions Pathway Record of Progress can be found by clicking on this link. How can you support your child? Read to or with your child daily (their English texts and other books/materials), asking questions and having them retell the story in their home language. Talk about your child’s day. Continue to speak in your home language at home, as research proves if they do, they will have a better chance of success learning English. That said, time to revisit and practice a newly learned language is also important. If you would like to know more about our ESOL programme at CBS, please contact our ESOL team leader, Chris Mashlan EMAIL CHRIS

- Travelwise | Campbells Bay School
Travelwise At Campbells Bay School we have a Travelwise programme, with the aim of minimising car traffic around the school and encouraging alternate and safe methods of getting to and from school. Travelwise is a programme for schools that works with the Auckland Council and ARTA to encourage the safe use of efficient transport. New Zealand has the most cars per person of any country in the world, and car trips to school make up about 40% of Auckland’s morning traffic. With Travelwise, Campbells Bay School is trying to do our bit to not contribute to that problem. The Travelwise programme brings a number of benefits for the school our students, and our parents and members of our community – both directly and indirectly. These include: OUR SCHOOL Reduced traffic problems. Higher levels of road safety. A well-maintained and up to date safety programme. Improved relationships with the local community. OUR STUDENTS Improved health and fitness. Improved personal safety skills. Increased knowledge and awareness of the local community. Greater confidence and independence. PARENTS & COMMUNITY Less time spent sitting in traffic. Reduced air and noise pollution. Gives parents more time in the morning with their kids. Improves overall road safety and improves cycling, walking and bus routes. Buses Campbells Bay School runs a school bus, a more efficient way to get kids to school than parents in cars. DOWNLOAD PDF CBS Wise Walkers CBS Wise Walkers is the official name of the Campbells Bay School walking buses. Walking school buses are made up of groups of children who walk designated routes to and from school, supervised by rostered parents. The parent to child ratio is 1:8 and parents ideally share the responsibility each week in return for their child walking. This is a great opportunity for kids to keep fit, relieve traffic congestion at school, and to socialise with other kids from the area, creating a fun, enjoyable walk to school. Children join the bus outside their house or at one of the meeting spots along the route. Each bus operates to suit the needs and schedules of the families on the route, so check with the coordinator of your bus for specific details. Feel free to have a trial walk first. Walking Bus Coordinators - WANTED We are on the look out for new walking school bus coordinators.
